Top 10 TV Shows to Binge Watch

Top Ten TV Shows to Binge Watch

I frigging love watching TV Shows. I can't help it!

For some reason, I find myself becoming obsessed with television shows often. Perhaps it's my way of escapism, or I simply love the world of fiction a little too much. Once I'm hooked, I'm hooked. There is no way out. I will finish a series very quickly and won't stop thinking about it for months, even years after. Sorry, not sorry.

I love love love TV, and maybe it's because I'm a writer. I over analysis characters and storylines, I look deeper than the average viewer, and I'm not ashamed of that creativity. So, without further ado, here are my recommended Top Ten TV Shows to Binge Watch:

Prison Break

You guessed it. My latest obsession! My life right now is Prison Break. How could it not be when the captivating, charming and gorgeous Wentworth Miller stars in it?!

Prison Break follows a man, Michael Scofield, a kind-hearted genius on his mission to break his brother, who is due to be executed, out of prison. Michael is convinced that his brother, Lincoln Burrows, is innocent of the crime for which he was committed, which was the murder of the vice president's brother.

The show is known for its incredibly creative, intelligent storylines, government corruption and the real nitty gritty issues faced in prison.

Prison Break's original run was four seasons from 2005 to 2009. In 2016, it was announced that an anticipated season 5 was on its way. I'm counting down the days!

Skins

Skins was the first show I fell in love with - Probably due to it being so real and edgy when it came to the real life struggles of the everyday teenager.

Skins is a British teen drama that followed the lives of a group of teenagers in Bristol, throughout two years of sixth form. It's controversial storylines have explored issues such as dysfunctional families, mental illness (depression, eating disorders and bipolar disorder), adolescent sexuality, gender, drug abuse, death and bullying. Each episode focuses on a particular character and the issues they face in their life. The episodes are named after the featured character.

The show premiered on E4 on 25 January 2007 with rave reviews! Over its initial six-year run, Skins was known for its change in characters, replacing its primary cast every two years. The show ended in 2010, but a desired seventh series of the show was broadcast in 2013, featuring some of the cast from its 2007–10 run. The show's name comes from the cigarette rolling papers known as "skins".

Gilmore Girls

This show is one close to my heart. The relationship between Mother and Daughter reminds me of my own with my mum. She's my best friend and watching a show so similar to my own life growing up makes Gilmore Girls feel like home.

The show follows young single mother Lorelai Gilmore and her 16-year-old daughter, also named Lorelai, but prefers to be called Rory, living in the fictional town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut.

The town is lovely, very close knit and filled with fabulously funny characters. The series is a pretty easy enjoyable watch and explores issues of family, friendship, and romance, as well as the divide in social class.

The show's main storyline focuses most clearly on Lorelai's difficult relationship with her wealthy, snobby parents, Emily and Richard Gilmore, and in Rory's interactions and romances with the students at the Chilton Academy, and later, Yale University.

On November 25, 2016, a four-part revival titled Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, aired on Netflix. Each episode covers a season, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. I'm so excited for the future of GG and hope Netflix makes more!

One Tree Hill

This show has to be my ultimate TV Show. Ever. OTH is set in the fictional town of Tree Hill in North Carolina and originally follows the lives of two half-brothers, Lucas Scott and Nathan Scott, who compete for positions on their school's basketball team, and the drama that ensues from the brothers' lives.

Filled with beautiful quotes, storylines and characters, this is one to watch and appreciate. I know so many different types of people who love One Tree Hill, from grown men to teens who weren't even alive when the show aired.

Pretty Little Liars

I only started getting into watching PLL early last year. - I'm one to leave a show until it has enough seasons to binge watch. I'm extremely impatient, and I love looking at spoilers. Ooops.

Set in the small town of Rosewood, Pennsylvania (The same set as Gilmore Girls, funnily enough), the series follows the lives of five best friends, Spencer Hastings, Aria Montgomery, Hanna Marin, Alison DiLaurentis and Emily Fields. The show follows this clique, who fall apart after the alleged murder of their leader, Alison DiLaurentis.

While uncovering secrets and lies involving the murder of Alison, the girls are stalked by an anonymous character named A. This show is spooky, thrilling and funny all in one.

Full House

Although I wasn't alive for the original airing, (September 1987) I couldn't possibly love a show more heartwarming and lovely as this one. Due to my obsession with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen throughout childhood, I eventually found Full House and never looked back.

DJ (Donna-Jo), Stephanie and Michelle Tanner are three sisters raised only by their father, Danny Tanner, due to their mother being killed by a drunk driver before the show begins. He needs help raising his three little girls, so he asks his musician brother-in-law, Jesse Katsopolis, (The gorgeous John Stamos) and his comedian best friend, Joey Gladstone, to move in with them.

Again, an easily enjoyable watch. The sitcom generally focuses on simple storylines with the occasional attention to drama and everyday family issues.

A sequel series, Fuller House, premiered on Netflix on February 26, 2016 - following the lives of DJ Tanner, her children and Stephanie Tanner 21 years after the original show ended with a similar/mirrored storyline to the previous series. Fuller House has had a lot of success since airing and has already released a second series with a third in the works.  Unfortunately, the Olsen twins don't make an appearance!

Gossip Girl

How did I ever live without this show? Narrated by the blogger "Gossip Girl", the series revolves around the fictional lives of upper-class teens residing in Manhattan's Upper East Side. The series originally ran on The CW for six seasons from September 19, 2007, to December 17, 2012.

The series begins with the anticipated return of Upper East Side teenage it girl Serena van der Woodsen. Gossip Girl reveals that Serena has been away at boarding school, but not everyone welcomes Serena back to Manhattan with open arms.

Blair Waldorf (TEEN ICON FOR ALL GIRLS), is the queen bee of what's known as Manhattan's Elite. She is the childhood "best friend" and occasional rival of Serena van der Woodsen.

The story also follows scholarship student Dan Humphrey, who is a self-described "outsider" from Brooklyn, Blair's first love and "golden boy", Nate Archibald, and the "bad boy" Chuck Bass.

As the show develops, so does its characters and storylines. This is the one show I wish would come back for a revival. I can't get enough of those Upper East Siders, and neither will you. You'll soon find yourself ending every text message with

xoxo, Gossip Girl.

Orange is The New Black

I was a little unsure of this series to begin with, but after the first season, I loved the comical drama. OITNB revolves around Piper Chapman, a woman in her 30s who is sentenced to 15 months in prison. After she had been convicted of transporting a suitcase full of drug money for her girlfriend Alex Vause, an international drug smuggler.

The offence took place 10 years before the start of the series, and in that time Piper had moved on to a peaceful, law-abiding life. Her sudden arrest disrupts her relationships with her fiancé, family and friends.

In prison, Piper is reunited with Alex (who named Piper in her trial, resulting in Piper's arrest) and they re-examine their relationship. Simultaneously, Piper must learn how to survive in prison, and how to overcome its numerous struggles.

Episodes often feature flashbacks of significant events from various inmates' and prison guards' pasts. These flashbacks typically explain how the inmate came to be in prison, or otherwise further develop the character's backstory.

The show also pays close attention to how instances of corruption, drug smuggling, funding cuts, overcrowding and guard brutality adversely impact not only the prisoners' health and well-being but also the prison's basic ability to fulfill its fundamental responsibilities and ethical obligations as a federal corrections institution.

That 70's Show

Again, this show took a few episodes for me to gain interest, but by the end of the show, I wished for more.

That 70's show is a coming of age sitcom, set in the fictional town 'Point Place' in Wisconsin. The show follows the life of nerdy Eric Forman and his five teenaged friends: Donna Pinciotti, the feminist next-door neighbor girlfriend of Eric; Steven Hyde, a cynical stoner and Eric's childhood friend; Michael Kelso, a dim-witted, narcissistic ladies man; Jackie Burkhart, a self-obsessed cheerleader preoccupied with wealth and status; and Fez, a goofy foreigner, whose country of origin is unknown, whose real name is unknown to all but him.

This is Us

Before One Tree Hill, I never believed another show could impact my thoughts and feelings so much until This is Us. The show may have only been released in 2016, but it's already a fan favourite!

The show follows siblings Kate, Kevin and Randall as their lives intertwine. Kate and Kevin were originally part of a triplet pregnancy, conceived in a bar, Froggy's, bathroom during Super Bowl XIV. However, their biological brother was stillborn. While their due date was October 12, 1980, they were born six weeks early on August 31.Their parents, Jack (The gorgeous Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca, intent on bringing home three babies, decide to adopt another newborn (Randall), a black child who was born on the same day and brought to the same hospital after his biological father abandoned him at a fire station.

The series episodes weave through the stories of the past and present of the characters, with most scenes taking place in 1980, 1989–1990, and the present day (2016–2017). This show has already stolen my heart after one series.
